Fumio Kishida was elected President of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) on 29 September. Of the four candidates, no one won a majority in the first round of voting. Kishida won the subsequent run-off election against Kono.
An extraordinary session of the Diet is expected to be convened on 4 October, and Kishida will be sworn in as the 100th Prime Minister, following an election for the post.
